Embrace the Future with Kindred Counseling
Kathryn Lachance, LCPC
Feeling distressed, alone, lost, and/or without direction? These are emotions and thoughts that can affect anyone. Often in life we first need to look within, find out how we are made, what makes up our identity to then be able to find what can drive us toward higher meaning and purpose. We are all one of a kind, built for a purpose and to have meaning. Many times depression comes from lack of a feeling of belonging or purpose in life. At kindred counseling you will find a safe place to belong and guide you to find the story within so that you can walk in the path of your unique journey.

Reasons people seek counseling
Emotional distress: Sadness, anxiety, anger, hopelessness - while most people feel emotional pain at times, sometimes it is intense and long lasting to the point where it interferes with your daily life. You may not even be able to identify an etiology to these emotions.
Depression: This is more then just a feeling of being “down in the dumps”. Depression can affect both your mind and body and permeate all areas of your life: sleeping, appetite, work, relationships, leisure, and how you feel about yourself. Symptoms can last weeks, months, or even years if left untreated.
Anxiety: In normal amounts, anxiety or stress can be helpful. Most people experience anxiety in their daily lives, however excessive anxiety or the irrational dread of everyday events can become debilitating and cause functional problems. Such anxiety can have a negative impact on your sleep, work and relationships.
Grief & loss: After a significant loss in ones life it is normal to grieve. Grief affects people in different ways. For most, they to adjust to life without the person they lost and endure it. However, some people get “stuck” in their intense feelings of grief and are unable to move through it and continue living to their full capacity.

Therapies Used for Adults:
Cognitive- Behavior Therapy:
CBT is based on the idea that a persons’ irrational thoughts are the basis for their negative behaviors or symptoms of depression, anxiety, etc. While negative behaviors may be a reaction to an event that occurred, the negative behavior actually occurs after a thought about the event. It is the thought about what happened that causes the reactive behavior but, in fact, that thought may be untrue. CBT focuses on helping clients learn how to recognize these irrational or maladaptive thoughts before reacting with behavior that may be unhelpful or unhealthy. Under this umbrella of care is also: Cognitive Processing therapy: CPT is a treatment to help adult clients with trauma process the event and learn coping.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy:
As the name implies, this approach focuses on solutions rather then the problem. There is also a focus on what the client wants to be different in the future, after the problem has been eliminated or lessoned. The clients’ strengths are assessed and highlighted to help the client learn how to solve problems in the future.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy:
DBT is an evidence- based psychotherapy that helps client learn to tolerate the ambiguity of the unknown and accept the emotion while learning coping skills to manage the emotions.

Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction Therapy:
MBSR is a type of therapy to help assist people with stress, anxiety, depression and pain. Mindfulness is the process of purposefully bringing ones’ attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgement, which one develops though the practice of meditation and acceptance.

Therapies used for Children
Trauma Focused CBT:
Trauma Focused CBT is an evidenced based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma. Research shows that TF CBT helps to resolve emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with complex trauma.

Child Directed Play Therapy:
is a one-to-one play interaction between a child and therapist in which the child directs the play. This helps to build the child's self esteem, helps them to understand their strengths and feelings, as they communicate through play prior to learning vocabulary for feelings. These understandings are then communicated to parents as they learn positive parenting skills.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
ACT helps a child understand and accept
their inner emotions. ACT therapists help children and teens use their deeper understanding of their emotional struggles to commit to moving forward in a positive way.

Parent and Child Interaction Therapy
PCIT helps parents and children who struggle with behavior problems or connection through real time sessions. Parents interact with children while therapists guide familites toward positive interactions.

Theoretical Approach
I have adopted a wellness model of mental health, based on the belief that most of the challenges that individuals and families encounter in life are a part of life’s natural rhythm. When counseling with a client I like to focus on strengths rather then weaknesses. Strengths can be built upon to help the client solve problems. I believe that all people have the potential for successfully meeting life’s day to day challenges and for dancing with life’s unanswerable existential questions. Seeking counseling is a healthy step in that process. My primary goal as your counselor is to help you connect with your innate capacity for wellness. I practice client- directed mindfulness informed therapy. It is within the safety of the therapeutic relationship that you can begin to explore your personal and inter-personal challenges more deeply, connect with your own wisdom and find the balance in your life that you seek. Together, we use the resources and strengths that you bring to the table in combination with appropriate therapeutic interventions to reach your goals.
